MONTREAL — By insisting on tolls on the next Champlain Bridge, despite opposition from the Quebec government, Stephen Harper is “thumbing his nose” at Quebec, says Bloc Québécois leader Daniel Paillé.
During his speech on free trade with Europe, which he gave Friday at the Montreal Board of Trade, the prime minister repeated that there will be tolls on the federally-owned bridge, which should be built by 2021.
Paillé noted that not only does the Quebec government oppose the tolls, but the Montreal Metropolitan Community and the South Shore business community as well.
The Bloc leader complained that Harper decided to impose these conditions without hearing the recommendations of all the parties affected by this file, even before the publication of a financial plan.
Paillé said all interveners agree that tolls will cause major disruptions of the traffic network. According to him, Harper’s statements reveal how much the federal government is disconnected from the reality of Quebec and its metropolis.
The Conservative government should present its financial plan for the new Champlain Bridge by the end of the year.
