Quebecers feel French is still under threat, poll suggests

English Canada doesn't see it, but Quebecers continue to feel French is under threat, a recently released government poll reveals.

Conducted for the Department of Canadian Heritage, the national poll found 67 per cent of Quebec residents agreed with a statement saying French is threatened. It also showed 70 per cent of Canadians whose first language at home is French held the same perception.

In contrast, a majority of anglophone Canadians - 52 per cent - disagreed with the idea and only 32 per cent agreed.

But the same poll showed the majority in both solitudes agreed the federal government is doing a good job "in promoting and protecting Canada's two official languages." In French Canada, only 28 per cent disagreed with the statement that their performance was good in protecting English and French in the country.

A federal government official said the poll is consistent with previous ones on the issue and it is likely French Canadians will always feel their language is under siege because of their minority position on the continent.

The Attitudes Towards Bilingualism poll, which was performed by Environics Research Group, involved 2,022 adult respondents and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
