“I have two great enemies, the southern army in front of me and the financial institutions, in the rear. Of the two, the one in the rear is the greatest enemy….. I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country ... corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war."

« J’ai deux grands ennemis : l’armée sudiste en face de moi, et la haute finance dans mon dos. Des deux, c’est la seconde qui est la plus dangereuse… Je vois s’approcher rapidement une crise qui m’inquiète au point que j’en tremble pour l’avenir du pays… Nous avons abandonné le pouvoir aux grandes entreprises, et nous allons connaître une vague de corruption qui va s’infiltrer jusqu’aux plus hauts niveaux de l’État. Les forces de l’argent vont tenter de se maintenir au pouvoir en excitant les classes sociales les unes contre les autres jusqu’à ce que toute la richesse soit concentrée en quelques mains et que notre République s’effondre. J’éprouve en ce moment plus d’inquiétude pour mon pays que je n’en ai jamais eue, même en temps de guerre. »
